IEBC Receives 20 Applications for New Chairperson Role Amidst Ongoing Political Controversy

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) selection board has recently announced that 20 applicants have thrown their hats in the ring for consideration as the new chairperson of the commission. The previous chairperson, Wafula Chebukati, has served his six-year term, which ended on January 17.

But despite former Prime Minister of Kenya and Azimio la Umoja leader Raila Odinga, protesting against the reformation of the IEBC, the panel has stated that they will proceed with the screening process of the applicants, and their names will be forwarded to President William Ruto for consideration.

The chairperson of the IEBC selection panel, Nelson Makanda, spoke at the Kenyatta International Conference Centre (KICC) about the importance of filling the vacant position and urged politicians to cooperate and agree on a way forward.

He emphasized that the applications have been received from all counties in the country, indicating a broad range of interest and participation.

Makanda also acknowledged the current political climate but stated that the appointment process must continue, regardless of the challenges.

He went on to say that once politicians reach an agreement on a course of action, they have the authority to change the law, and Kenyans must follow it.

In relation, a total of 920 applicants applied for the seven IEBC commission slots. Of which 20 are vying for the position of IEBC chairperson.

The screening process will begin shortly, and the selection board will consider each applicant’s qualifications and experience. Ultimately, the president will have the final say in the appointment of the new chairperson.

And with the appointment of the new chairperson, the IEBC hopes to restore confidence in the electoral process and ensure free, fair, and transparent elections in the future.

The IEBC is a critical independent institution in Kenya, and the selection of the new chairperson will be watched closely by citizens and politicians alike.
